Off-the-shelf business intelligence products are easy to implement, incredibly powerful, rich with features and capable of aggregating, integrating, and analyzing data from nearly any part of the organization. Most companies are not using their business intelligence systems for what they are worth. 



The key to designing a successful business intelligence system and strategy is metrics. They should be closely aligned with a company’s strategy and main capabilities. They should include both internal and external inputs, and encompass both leading and lagging indicators. Perhaps no aspect of a Business Intelligence System implementation is more difficult or more important than choosing metrics that are strategically and mathematically sound.
